Central distillation room D310

The laboratory offers distillation of up to 10 L of different solvents under nitrogen.

Introduction

The SU-management is responsible for the distillation room D310.

For the recycling and reprocessing of technical or cheap solvent qualities, working groups may use the large rotary evaporators in HCI D310. The filling of the starter vessels with the solvent to be distilled, as well as the addition of the molecular sieve granulates for the pre-drying, or with appropriate salts* for the removal of peroxides must be done by the users themselves. Strict safety rules must be obeyed inside this room, in order to prevent the release of solvent vapours and when using peroxide contaminated solvents.

*Removal of peroxides in solvents:

Removing peroxides in solvents using reducing agents will only be successful when well established instructions are followed, e.g. with iron(II)-sulphate (e.g. for diethylether), copper(I)-chloride (for tetrahydrofuran) or tin(II)-chloride (for dioxane). More universally apt is the filtration over active aluminium oxide. Because peroxides are more polar than the solvent, they will be adsorbed to the aluminium oxide. The capacity of the aluminium oxide depends on the type of solvent. Please observe the details on the datasheet of the aluminium oxide from the supplier!

Infrastructure:

  • 2 large rotation evaporation systems with half automatic distillation column and filling point for the distilled liquids

General conditions of use

The use of the central distillation room D310 must be announced using the reservation system of this website. The safety officer of the working groups normally have a key to the room D310. Users must obtain this key from these people, and return it afterwards.

The users are required to return their workspace and their equipment in a clean condition and dispose of all generated hazardous waste properly via the central waste disposal facilities HCI D276. Those who fail to clean it, after finishing their work, the cleaning service will be charged with at least CHF 600. Abandoned materials are basically discarded or recycled.
